Perfect eyebrows are a beauty essential. Eyebrow shaping can be so easy if you follow our simple eyebrow shape guidelines. Then, you'll have the beautiful eyebrows you've always wanted.

Just take a look at today's biggest, most visible celebrities. Sure, they all have fantastic hair - but more importantly, they all have beautiful, symmetrical, perfect eyebrows. Jennifer Anniston, Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie....can you picture them? You've seen them a million times, right? Ever notice their eyebrows? Probably not......

Why, you ask? Good question! You never notice these celebrity eyebrows because they're perfect. The quiet little hairs above the eyes are doing their job protecting their owner's eyes and not drawing attention to themselves. Why, you ask? Because you only notice eyebrows when they're mismatched, ill-shapen, the wrong color, or the wrong style. You don't notice the good ones, you only notice the bad ones.

Next question...Is getting perfect eyebrows possible for all women?

Absolutely, resoundingly yes, that is, if you follow some simple guidelines and let your creativity do the rest.

Let's start with identifying how most eyebrow problems start. Either you've tried to create your own perfect eyebrows by tweezing one side, then the other side and....... yikes! Before you know it you end up with very thin, very uneven eyebrows and lots of tears - OR - you let someone else wax your eyebrows and.....Whack! You leave the salon so embarrassed because your eyebrows look worse than when you entered. And you paid the pricey spa price for those bad brows.

The solution is for you or your beauty professional to learn the art and science of creating beautiful, symmetrical, perfect eyebrows.

The Art of Creating Beautiful Eyebrows

Make up artistry is both a right-brained and left-brained endeavor involving specific guidelines for the left brain and the use of the artistic side - the right brain. That involves color choices, decisions about which choice of two or more correct-shape choices looks better, or bending a rule for artistic freedom.

Eyebrow design is similar to make up artistry in that it involves both the right brain and the left brain. However, eyebrow shaping does involve some left-brain, hard-and-fast rules that should not generally be toyed with or changed.

Some of the greatest make up artists of all times, such as the late Kevyn Aucoin, are almost completely right-brained. Mr. Aucoin created some of the most beautiful eyebrows. So it goes to show you that you can be oriented to the right brain (artistic side), the left brain (the technical side), or both, and still be able to create and shape brows.

The Science of Creating Beautiful Eyebrows

You provide the artistic side. The scientific side of eyebrows is where we come in. The science of eyebrow design, like all sciences, has evolved over time. Old rules that used to be followed are no longer practiced and rules that people still try to use are really obsolete and should not be followed.

We will start with three simple rules below and we will point out a rule that has evolved and changed, a rule that is obsolete and unfortunately still followed, and a rule that hasn't ever changed.

The beginning point of the eyebrow. This rule is one that changed over time. For some unknown reason, the old rule used to tie the base of the nose to the beginning point of the brow. We have purposely chopped up that sentence so we are never mis-quoted regarding the correct position of the beginning point of the eyebrow.

The correct position of the beginning point of the eyebrow (where the eyebrow should start) is directly over the inner corner of the eye – with possible modifications.

The possible modification of the beginning point of the eyebrow is based on the person's eye set, that is whether the eyes are well set, close set, or wide set. The concept of Eye Set is so important in eyebrow shaping, make up application, and hair styling that an entire chapter is dedicated to it in the book, "How to Create the Perfect Eyebrow".

How might one modify the beginning point of the eyebrow? Great question....The answer is based on the client's Eye Set, the beginning point can be moved outward by removing eyebrow hair at the beginning point, or the beginning point can move inward by growing in hairs at the beginning point.

The ending point of the eyebrow. The rule that guides the ending point is a long-standing rule and one that has not changed over time. The correct ending point should be the intersection point along the brow line that occurs when a straight-edged object is placed at the base of the nose, intersects the outer corner of the eye, and finds the intersection point along the eyebrow.

Should the ending point of the eyebrow ever be moved from that intersection point? The answer is no because it's placement maintains balance of the facial features based on the central focus of the face and the eyes that the brows cover. Time and again, make up artists as well as non-beauty professionals have tampered with the ending point with unattractive results. What ends up happening is that the eyes are either dragged downward or excessively dramatic and completely out of balance. We recommend always following the ending point rule for the eyebrow.

The arch of the eyebrow. The current, long-standing rule regarding where the arch should be along the brow is obsolete and should no longer be followed. The obsolete rule uses the outer rim of the iris (obsolete rule) to locate the arch. Do not, we repeat, do not use the iris to find the arch or any other part of the eyebrow. This rule is silly and does not hold any bearing on where the arch is or should be.

If you are untrusting and wish to verify this (we hope you do), look at any magazine and find photographs where the actresses or models are looking straight ahead. Take a ruler and place it at the outer rim of the model's eye and see where the ruler, going vertically upwards, intersects with the actual arch of the eyebrow.

You will see, time and time again, the there is no relationship between the iris and the arch. If there is, it is coincidental and not common.

So...where does that leave us when we are trying to figure out where the arch belongs?

First, it is important to know that the arch and the high point are two different parts of the eyebrow. Information regarding the difference between the high point and the arch is taught in the Adriel International Eyebrow Design classes.

How can you make sure the arch is in the correct place?

The optimal location for the arch is based on the existing high point. If there is no existing high point, then it must be created and then the arch location is easy to find.

How do you decide where to put the high point and the arch if one does not exist? Advanced Eyebrow Design...The answer is that the arch and the high point, if they do not exist, are created based on the length and width of the upper zone and other facial characteristics.
